A Coup in Texas

Looks like the state Democrats and some moderate Republicans unseated Tom Craddick, who was Tom DeLay’s protege in the state and who has represented Midland–which was W’s home base–since 1969.

Seems to me that the medium-term future for Texas is that it will become a bastion of moderate Republicanism.  The party will likely maintain control of nearly every statewide office but rabid evangelicals will fall away as Rotary Club conservatives realize the state’s demographics moving away from the party unless they themselves exert more influence.

As such, super-expensive Texas will present tantalizing opportunities for Democratic wins that will likely fall flat; i.e., it will be the mirror opposite of New Jersey, which hasn’t elected a Republican Senator since 1972 but where the GOP always pisses money away.
